This is a fantastic combination project in Java. In the morning, you'll assist with teaching at a kindergarten, and in the afternoon, you'll help the foundation with various tasks. The specific activities depend on your interests and background. You could assist the foundation with fundraising, social media, and all other forms of communication.
The Kindergarten
At the kindergarten, you can help with English lessons and sports and games. You’ll support the regular staff from 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM.
The Community Project
You’ll join our local contact person and work within the community. This area is outside of the tourist zone and is much less affluent. The people here are incredibly friendly, and as a volunteer, you’ll immediately feel at home. We have a space available where many children come to develop their life skills. Our contact person, along with several local volunteers, aims to teach these skills to the youth. As a volunteer, you'll help raise awareness of their potential and abilities while also ensuring they have a great time.
Responsibilities
Example of a Workday
Because this program is very versatile, the schedule is tailored to each volunteer's skills and interests. Volunteers typically work 5 days a week, mostly during the day. Together, we’ll create a program that fits you best.
Five days a week, around 4 hours per day.
This project has four permanent staff members and two local volunteers. At the preschool, you’ll also be working with the regular teachers. In addition, you may be working alongside other volunteers from the Netherlands if they’ve signed up.
English is spoken at the project. Basic English is sufficient.
The project closes at the end of Ramadan and for two weeks following.
During your volunteer placement, you’ll stay in a hostel next to the “Be a Child” organisation in Malang. It’s a neat and tidy hostel with six beds across two bedrooms. There’s a shared kitchen, dining area, and lounge with a TV. The hostel also has one bathroom and one toilet, plus a computer available for use. There’s a spacious garden as well.
Drinking water is free at the hostel, and there’s free Wi-Fi throughout. To stay connected, you can use an Indonesian prepaid SIM card for cheap internet, but keep in mind it might be a bit slow.
You’ll share breakfast and dinner with the children at the hostel. If you’re vegetarian or have any food allergies, just let us know in advance.
You can get around Malang using local buses, small blue minibuses that cost around €0.25 (approx. AUD 0.40) per ride. It’s very straightforward.
If you’ve got a little extra room in your bag and would like to bring something useful for the project, it’s hugely appreciated! Just check in with us first so we can suggest what’s most needed.
We’ll pick you up from Malang airport.
Take a look at the optional trips we offer to help you make the most of your time off! There are some incredible experiences to enjoy, and since you're already in such a beautiful destination, it’s a great chance to explore more of the country.

If you’re passionate about education and community care and ready to take on a meaningful challenge, this combined project in Java could be a perfect match. Together, we can make a lasting impact in the local community.
We completely understand that having your child volunteer overseas can feel like a big step. In fact, it’s often just as exciting for parents as it is for the young person themselves, and sometimes even a little more nerve-racking. That’s why we want to reassure you that your child is in good hands.
Since 2004, we’ve been supporting volunteers and have guided many young people through meaningful international experiences.
We take safety seriously. That begins with carefully selecting our partner organisations, volunteer projects, and host families. Every placement is thoroughly checked to make sure it meets our high standards for safety, support, and ethical practices.
Our experienced and caring local contacts are always there to support volunteers throughout their journey. From clear pre-departure preparation to personal assistance during the project, we’re available to help whenever needed.
We believe strongly in open communication. You're always welcome to contact us with any questions or concerns. We’re here not only for the volunteers, but for their families too.
You can feel confident knowing we are fully committed to creating a safe, supportive, and positive experience. Your child’s wellbeing, safety, and overall happiness are our top priorities.
If there's anything you’d like to ask or talk through, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We're here to support you every step of the way.
