This project is all about giving (endangered) wild animals that have been confiscated or voluntarily surrendered a safe place to stay, helping them recover, and ultimately releasing them back into their natural habitat.
Working alongside our Indonesian keepers, you’ll get stuck into a variety of tasks, including:
*There may also be extra opportunities to:
*Note: While these extra activities are exciting, we can’t guarantee you’ll be involved in them during your stay.
Your day kicks off at 7:00am, usually starting with preparing food for the animals. Then, you’ll team up with one of our keepers to clean the animal enclosures. Tasks are organised on a weekly schedule, so you’ll always know what’s coming up next.
Working hours:
You’ll work 6 days a week from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM, including a lunch break from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM.
Other colleagues / who you’ll work with:
There are 5 permanent Indonesian staff members (keepers). The keepers speak fairly good English and are always keen to learn more. Of course, there are other staff like managers and vets, but volunteers don’t usually work directly with them.
Language spoken at the project:
As a volunteer, you’ll speak English at this project.
Holiday periods:
This project runs all year round.
Accommodation:
You can get a good idea of the accommodation from the video about the project. There are two wooden dormitories (one for men and one for women). There’s space for 8 men and 12 women. Bedding is provided, and laundry is included in the price. Toilets and showers are traditional Indonesian style: squat toilets and a water basin (with cold water) for showering.
Drinking water, tea, coffee, lunch and dinner (Indonesian cuisine) are included in the price, you just need to arrange your own breakfast. Vegetarian and vegan meals are available.
There’s no WiFi at the project, but you can buy a local SIM card with (un)limited data. Just make sure your phone is unlocked.
Transport to and from the project:
You’ll be staying at the project site, so no transport is needed.
Materials the project could use:
If you’ve got a little extra space in your bag and would like to bring something for the project, they would really appreciate it. Just check in with us first to see what useful items would be good to bring.
Pick-up service:
We’ll organise a taxi to pick you up from the airport and take you to the project. The cost is 1.3 million IDR one way. Travel time is at least 5 hours. This cost is included in the weekly price for your first week.
Free time:
Check out our optional trips to see all the amazing things you can do in your free time! We’ve got some fantastic excursions. And since you’re already in such a beautiful location, it’s the perfect chance to explore more of the country!
Local contact:
My name is Hanneke and I’ve been the volunteer coordinator at this project since January 2016. In short... I followed my dream!
We’re looking for volunteers with a passion for animal welfare and wildlife conservation. You’ll be helping care for and rehabilitate (endangered) wild animals in Indonesia.
Affinity with Animal Welfare:
Enthusiasm and a genuine desire to help are essential. Experience in animal care is a plus.
Initiative and Proactiveness:
The ability to work independently and take initiative is crucial. You’ll be caring for animals and coming up with creative ideas for their enrichment.
Patience and Empathy:
It’s important to be understanding and patient, especially when working with traumatised animals.
Cultural Sensitivity:
Respect and understanding for local customs and traditions are important. Being open and willing to learn from the local culture is essential for a positive and respectful experience.
Flexibility and Adaptability:
Working in Indonesia can involve varying conditions, so being flexible and adaptable, both physically and in your working environment is key.
Communication Skills:
Good communication is essential for collaborating with local staff.
Team Spirit:
Teamwork is the key to success. A positive attitude and willingness to collaborate with local staff and other volunteers are important for achieving our goals.
As a volunteer, you’ll be involved in daily animal care, cleaning enclosures, creating enrichment activities, and observing animals. Your time in Indonesia will offer opportunities for personal and professional growth, discovering new cultures, and making unforgettable memories.
If you have a passion for animal welfare and conservation, and you’re ready to contribute in a challenging yet rewarding setting, then this wildlife project in Indonesia is perfect for you. Together, we can make a lasting impact on the lives of these animals.
We completely understand that having your child volunteer overseas can feel like a big step. In fact, it’s often just as exciting for parents as it is for the young person themselves, and sometimes even a little more nerve-racking. That’s why we want to reassure you that your child is in good hands.
Since 2004, we’ve been supporting volunteers and have guided many young people through meaningful international experiences.
We take safety seriously. That begins with carefully selecting our partner organisations, volunteer projects, and host families. Every placement is thoroughly checked to make sure it meets our high standards for safety, support, and ethical practices.
Our experienced and caring local contacts are always there to support volunteers throughout their journey. From clear pre-departure preparation to personal assistance during the project, we’re available to help whenever needed.
We believe strongly in open communication. You're always welcome to contact us with any questions or concerns. We’re here not only for the volunteers, but for their families too.
You can feel confident knowing we are fully committed to creating a safe, supportive, and positive experience. Your child’s wellbeing, safety, and overall happiness are our top priorities.
If there's anything you’d like to ask or talk through, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We're here to support you every step of the way.
Warm regards,
