Would you like to travel to Asia with a group of peers (ages 16 to 19) while combining it with volunteer work? Then the Youth Trip to Java & Bali is definitely for you. During this trip, you'll explore two remarkable islands of Indonesia. The journey begins on Java, where you'll engage in volunteer work within a traditional community, organising sports and games for local children. After the volunteer work, you'll cross over to the island of Bali, a popular destination among backpackers due to its numerous attractions, diverse culture, and beautiful beaches. Curious about the highlights of this trip and the itinerary? Read on!
Highlights of the Youth Trip Java & Bali:
We depart from Schiphol Airport towards our first destination: Java. After a long flight, we arrive in Yogyakarta, where we'll spend the first few days. We'll visit Borobudur, the largest Buddhist temple in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage site. A visit to this extraordinary temple is certainly worthwhile. Additionally, we'll take a city tour of Yogyakarta, exploring the city's landmarks, and embark on a jeep trip to Mount Merapi, which stands approximately 3,000 meters high and is the most active volcano in Indonesia.
Our journey continues by train eastward to Malang. In this city, we'll spend the next few days volunteering. Before we begin, we'll be welcomed with a welcome dinner and an introduction to what lies ahead. The volunteer work includes organising sports and games for a traditional community. We'll also collaborate with the foundation "Wees een Kind" to distribute meals to underprivileged individuals living along the railway tracks in Malang.
After several intensive days of volunteering, we bid farewell to the project. But don't worry: the journey continues. We travel towards Mount Bromo, an active volcano set in a unique landscape. The lava has destroyed everything around the crater, leaving behind a grey, moon-like terrain. We'll hike from Jemplang to Cemoro Lawang, where we'll stay overnight. Along the way, we'll pass the Jago Temple and the Pelangi Waterfall. The next morning, we rise early to hike to the Mt. Pananjakan viewpoint. Once at the top, we're treated to a stunning view of the Bromo volcano's surroundings. We'll have breakfast together and enjoy the sunrise. The hike promises to be a challenging but unforgettable experience.
It's time to leave Java behind and begin the second part of our journey: the beautiful Bali. This is one of Indonesia's most renowned islands, known for its stunning rice fields and beautiful beaches. We'll cross over to Bali by boat from Java and head to the fishing village of Permuteran. Here, we'll explore Bali's underwater world. Due to its beautiful coral reefs and diverse fish species, it's a popular spot for snorkelling. The following day, we'll proceed to Lovina to spot dolphins. Since the animals are mostly visible in the morning, we'll set out early by boat. The rest of the day is free to relax on the beach and recover from the intense days.
We continue our journey to Ubud, located in the heart of Bali and considered the cultural centre of the island. The area is predominantly green, with palm trees and rice fields. A popular attraction in Ubud is the Monkey Forest, home to over 250 curious monkeys who are eager to come close. It's the perfect place to observe monkeys in the wild. Additionally, we'll spend a day with a traditional rice farmer, learning about local life and their way of living and working. After lunch at the farmer's home, we'll take a walk through the rice fields and explore the rest of Ubud's surroundings.
The final stop of our journey through Indonesia is Kuta. This coastal town lies north of Bali and is the ideal place to relax on the beach and enjoy the sun. We'll conclude the trip with a farewell dinner, reflecting on a beautiful and special journey. Then, we'll prepare for the return trip and head back to the Netherlands, where we'll be welcomed by friends and family. The Youth Trip to Java & Bali is guaranteed to be an unforgettable adventure!
Please note: Due to the holiday season, the Christmas trip to Java & Bali is two days shorter than the summer trip. During the Christmas trip, the activities in Yogyakarta and Permuteran are omitted. In Lovina, there is still the opportunity to snorkel after dolphin spotting.
During the Youth Trip to Java & Bali, you'll participate in various projects in Malang, a city located south of Java. You'll engage in volunteer work within a traditional community, organising sports and games for local children. Additionally, you'll assist in a daycare centre for underprivileged families. Parents work during the day to earn a living, while the children stay at the daycare to avoid exposure to risks such as abuse and crime. Furthermore, Vrijwillig Wereldwijd collaborates with the foundation "Wees een Kind." With this foundation, you'll help distribute meals to underprivileged individuals living along the railway tracks in Malang, who have little prospect of a better future.

@VolunteerWorldwide
At Volunteer Worldwide, we believe it’s important to keep both young people and their parents fully informed. We understand you’ll have plenty of questions before departure, and we’re here to help you every step of the way. What can you expect from Volunteer Worldwide? What about safety? And how are the costs handled? Read on to find out!
Comprehensive guidance before and during your trip
All youth trips are supervised by a local guide and one or more Dutch or Belgian team leaders. You’ll meet your team leaders in advance at one of our pre-departure meetups. They will accompany and support the group throughout the entire trip. Our team leaders are experienced travellers and understand what it’s like to adapt to a completely different culture.
Upon arrival in the destination country, your group will be introduced to the local guide. These guides are used to working with international volunteers and speak English well.
Your main contacts in the Netherlands are Patricia and Daan, who stay in daily contact with the trip leaders throughout your journey.
An information brochure full of useful details and tips
You’ll receive a detailed brochure to help you prepare for your journey. It includes information about your itinerary, volunteering tasks, the country and culture, as well as handy travel tips.
It also outlines which preparations you’ll need to make and how to go about them.
Of course, if you have questions at any time, our Netherlands-based contacts, Patricia and Lotte, are always available via phone or email.
Pre-departure meetup
A few weeks before departure, we’ll organise a meetup for all participants. This gives you a chance to meet your fellow travellers and the accompanying leaders in person.
The team includes at least one or two Dutch and/or Belgian supervisors (alongside a local guide).
We’ll also go through the day-to-day itinerary and cover important topics to ensure everyone is well prepared. Friends and family are more than welcome to join you on the day.
We book your flight
We arrange all flights to ensure that everyone travels together on the same outbound and return flights. Volunteer Worldwide works closely with an independent travel agent who monitors all flight details and will act as your point of contact regarding flights.
Once you’ve registered for a youth trip with Volunteer Worldwide and submitted your signed confirmation form, you’ll be asked to make a deposit within three weeks.
This deposit is $299, which gives you plenty of time to save for the remaining amount. The balance is due approximately 8 weeks before departure.
Safety is our top priority. We’re in daily contact with our local partners in each country where Volunteer Worldwide operates, so we’re always aware of the latest developments. Every country has its own customs and behavioural expectations, which we’ll discuss in advance with both participants and parents to ensure everyone is well-informed and respectful while abroad.
We’re happy to take the time to answer any questions from parents. We understand that youth trips can be an exciting and nerve-wracking experience for both the participants and their families. That’s why parents are closely involved throughout the entire process. From the initial information request to the official registration, the preparations, and the departure. Naturally, parents are also kept informed during the trip itself.
The team leaders stay in regular contact with the parents to provide updates on how the group is doing, what activities they’ve done, and where they are. We recognise how important it is for parents to feel confident that their son or daughter is well-prepared and well-supported throughout the journey. That’s why parents are also welcome to attend the pre-departure meetup, where they can get to know the organisation, the supervisors, and other parents.
Volunteer Worldwide has over 20 years of experience in international volunteering and guiding young people abroad. We are fully committed to making sure every trip runs smoothly and safely.
$2,969 is the cost for the 17-day summer holiday trip.
You’ll pay a deposit of $299 upon registration.
Around April/May, you’ll pay for the flight ticket (booked by us).
The remaining balance is due about six weeks before departure or once the trip is fully booked.
Prefer a different payment arrangement? Just get in touch and we’ll work it out with you.
