In South Africa, many children grow up without learning how to swim, and unfortunately, drowning is a serious problem. This project is working to change that and with your help through the Swim Safe program, we can reach even more kids!
Imagine being the one to teach children how to feel comfortable in the water, how to float, and how to stay safe. Even better... seeing them laugh, play, and enjoy the water with their mates. You’ll be making a real difference in the lives of kids in Port Elizabeth, where this program has already helped many children learn to swim thanks to the support of dedicated volunteers like you.
Your energy and enthusiasm are key to the success of this project. You’ll help kids become confident in the water through play, introduce basic swimming skills, and teach them how to stay safe if they ever fall in. It’s incredibly rewarding to see the progress they make and to know you’ve played a part in it.
Your day kicks off at 8:00am at a local pool in the township, about 20 minutes from where you're staying. The kids will already be buzzing with excitement, ready to dive into their lesson. Every half hour, new groups rotate through, giving you the chance to work with lots of children throughout the day.
School finishes around 2:00pm, and so do your lessons. There’s also now an indoor pool, which means lessons can continue rain, hail or shine!
Working hours
You’ll be working 5 days a week from 08:00 AM to 2:00 PM on the project.
Other colleagues / who you’ll work with
Depending on the number of volunteers, you’ll always be working alongside a lifeguard or swimming instructor. A supervisor will be with you, so you’re never alone.
Language spoken on the project
English is the main language used on the project. As most people here have received more formal education, they generally speak English quite well.
Holiday periods
From December to mid-January is summer holiday in South Africa. During this time the project is paused. The same applies during South African winter (our summer). February is an ideal time to start.
Accommodation
There are two guesthouses with their own kitchens. You may have a room to yourself or share with someone else. There’s WiFi, a washing machine, and the beach is only 5 minutes away by car. The house is regularly cleaned.
Transport to and from the project
Volunteers usually rent a car together. Costs are shared and are approximately $85 per week.
Materials the project could really use
If you’ve got some spare room in your bag and would like to bring something for the project, it’s greatly appreciated. Get in touch with us to check what items would be most useful.
Pick-up service
At PE Airport, you’ll be warmly welcomed by our local contact. From there, you’ll be taken to your accommodation. Then we’ll help you withdraw local cash, get a South African SIM card, and do your first grocery shop. That evening, you’ll head out for dinner with your housemates, a fun welcome.
The next day, you’ll go through the Code of Conduct, do a township tour, and get familiar with your new environment. It might feel a bit strange at first, but you’ll adjust quickly. A few days later, you’ll have a workshop covering South African history, safety, traditions, and customs. Then, your new adventure can begin!
Free time
Check out some additional trips to see what you can explore in your free time! We’ve got some incredible excursions available. Since you’re already in such a stunning destination, it’s the perfect opportunity to explore more of the country!

For this project, we're looking for volunteers who want to help children learn how to swim in Port Elizabeth. Many children in South Africa are unable to swim, which contributes to a high rate of drownings. You can help reduce this by giving swimming lessons and helping children feel confident and safe in the water.
The projects in South Africa are suitable for young volunteers aged 18+ as well as for people aged 50 and over.
Affinity for Swimming and Education: Passion for teaching swimming and working with children.
Initiative and Proactivity: Able to work independently and organise activities.
Patience and Empathy: Understanding and patient when working with children.
Cultural Sensitivity: Respect for local customs and traditions.
Flexibility and Adaptability: Willing to adjust to various situations in South Africa.
Communication Skills: Able to collaborate well with local staff and fellow volunteers.
Team Spirit: Teamwork is essential.
As a volunteer, you’ll be teaching swimming to children from 8:00am to 2:00pm, five days a week. The lessons take place in the townships, where you’ll work alongside a lifeguard and swimming instructor.
During the summer holiday (December to mid-January), the project is on break.
Your stay in South Africa will offer opportunities for personal and professional growth, cultural discovery, and unforgettable experiences.
If you’re passionate about swimming and education, and you're ready to commit to a meaningful and rewarding challenge, then this project in South Africa is perfect for you. Together, we can make a lasting impact on the lives of these children.
We completely understand that having your child volunteer overseas can feel like a big step. In fact, it’s often just as exciting for parents as it is for the young person themselves, and sometimes even a little more nerve-racking. That’s why we want to reassure you that your child is in good hands.
Since 2004, we’ve been supporting volunteers and have guided many young people through meaningful international experiences.
We take safety seriously. That begins with carefully selecting our partner organisations, volunteer projects, and host families. Every placement is thoroughly checked to make sure it meets our high standards for safety, support, and ethical practices.
Our experienced and caring local contacts are always there to support volunteers throughout their journey. From clear pre-departure preparation to personal assistance during the project, we’re available to help whenever needed.
We believe strongly in open communication. You're always welcome to contact us with any questions or concerns. We’re here not only for the volunteers, but for their families too.
You can feel confident knowing we are fully committed to creating a safe, supportive, and positive experience. Your child’s wellbeing, safety, and overall happiness are our top priorities.
If there's anything you’d like to ask or talk through, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We're here to support you every step of the way.
Warm regards,
