Then the Sports Education Project in Morocco might be exactly what you’re looking for!
Here, you’ll work with local kids and teens, coaching them in sports like football, basketball, volleyball and athletics, and maybe even introducing them to a few fun games from back home. It’s not just about teaching skills; it’s about sharing the joy of movement and showing the power of teamwork.
Ready to see how sport can change lives?
This is your moment to bring your energy and enthusiasm to something truly meaningful, all while experiencing a vibrant new culture and making memories that’ll stick with you for life.
As a volunteer on the Sports Education Project, you’ll have plenty of chances to put your love for sport into action. You’ll help coach kids and teens in a mix of sports including football, basketball, tennis, athletics and more. It’s not just about drills and techniques (though those matter too). It’s also about building confidence, encouraging team spirit and making movement fun for everyone.
You’ll take an active role in training sessions, helping kids with their skills, cheering them on and bringing in new games or exercises. Whether you're guiding them through warm-ups, running a mini tournament or just kicking the footy around, your energy will make a big difference.
You’ll also collaborate with local coaches and other volunteers to help broaden the range of sports on offer and make sessions accessible to as many kids as possible. Your role goes beyond coaching. You’ll be creating a space where kids can grow both physically and personally.
Your alarm might go off early but you’ll be pumped for the day ahead. After a good brekkie with your host family (a great way to get a taste of local life), you’ll head to the project site around 8:30am. By 9:00am, a bunch of energetic kids will be waiting, ready to jump into a day full of action.
The morning kicks off with a group warm-up that might include stretching, moving and probably a few laughs, before diving into the first session of the day. You might be leading a football drill, running some athletics races or coaching a basketball game. It’s not just about sharpening skills. It’s about making sure the kids are having a blast, building trust and learning to work together.
Lunchtime is your chance to take a breather, share stories with the team and maybe pick up a few words of Arabic or French. In the afternoon, you might shake things up with a new game or sport, maybe something from home that the kids haven’t tried before.
By 4:00pm, the workday winds down and you’re free to enjoy your evening however you like. Explore the town, chill out with your fellow volunteers or just relax at your homestay. Around 8:30pm, you’ll share dinner with your host family, often the perfect moment to laugh over the day’s highlights and feel a genuine connection to your new home away from home.
Every day brings something new and every moment is a chance to grow, learn and help expand the horizons of the kids you’re working with.
From 9:00am to 4:00pm
You’ll work from Monday to Friday.
You’ll be working alongside the project team and possibly with other volunteers.
Speaking Arabic or French is not a requirement for volunteers. However, we do encourage you to learn as many Arabic or French words as you can during your stay.
When you apply, we’ll always check for local holidays or school breaks and go over these with you.
The Morocco program starts every Monday, and we ask that you arrive in Rabat the day before your chosen start date for your airport pickup. Accommodation is provided from the Sunday night before your start date through to (and including) the Friday night before your end date.
If you arrive a day or two earlier or stay a little longer, that’s totally fine, but you’ll need to pay $50 AUD per night directly to the local team (this includes meals). Note that extra nights are subject to availability, so please arrange this in advance with our local staff.
Volunteers are responsible for organising their own return trip to the airport, but our local team will be happy to help with this.
Volunteers stay either with a host family or in program accommodation, where they live with a local family and other volunteers. These families receive part of your program fee to cover support, food and lodging.
Staying with a local family is a great way to experience Moroccan culture, meet local people, eat traditional food, speak the local dialect (Darija – Moroccan Arabic) and be part of everyday customs and traditions.
Life in the host families and volunteer houses is comfortable. Volunteers usually share a room with one or two other volunteers, although in some host families private rooms are available.
It’s important to note that Moroccan homes are communal and often use Sdader (Moroccan sofas) as both beds and seating during the day.
Many volunteers can walk to their project placement. If that’s not possible, we’ll help arrange transport for you.
Got extra room in your luggage? Bringing along useful items for the project is always greatly appreciated. Just check in with us beforehand so we can suggest helpful and practical things to pack.
We’ll pick you up from the airport. Once you arrive, you’ll be taken to your accommodation in Rabat, and we’ll walk you through the next steps, including meeting the team, fellow volunteers and your orientation session.
Most of our volunteers arrive by plane. A team member in Morocco will be waiting for you at the airport with a sign bearing your name. Once you’ve booked your flight, please let Volunteer Worldwide know your flight number and airline so we can arrange the pickup and track delays if necessary.
Casablanca Airport is about an hour from Rabat. While pickup from Casablanca isn’t included in the program fee, many volunteers fly there due to more international flight options and cheaper airfares. From there, you can take the train to Rabat, where you’ll be met by a team member at the Rabat train station.
The trip takes around an hour and the ticket costs about 90 DH (AUD $15). You’ll need to catch a train from Casablanca Airport to Ain Sebaa, Casa Port or Casa Voyageur station, then transfer to a train to Rabat Ville.
Orientation is led by our local contact person and begins on the morning of your chosen start date. It covers everything you need to know about your time in Morocco. An introduction to the country, local customs, rules and expectations, safety, travel tips, your project details and placement. It’s also a great time to meet other volunteers and exchange contact info for weekend trips and social activities.
During long weekends, volunteers can travel to incredible destinations like Marrakech, the Merzouga Dunes, Tinghir (Ksabah), Fes, Meknes (Imperial Cities), Volubilis (Roman ruins), Tangier or even Southern Europe, including Gibraltar, Andalusia, Portugal and southern Spain.
Mustapha is the project’s contact person in Morocco.
For the Sports Education Project in Morocco, we’re looking for enthusiastic volunteers with a passion for sport and coaching kids. You’re not just someone who loves playing a sport, you’re someone who wants to help children learn new skills, build confidence and have fun. Whether you have experience in coaching, sports education or just a huge passion for sport, your energy and enthusiasm will make a real impact!
We’re looking for volunteers who are at least 18 years old and have a good command of English. You don’t need to speak Arabic or French, but we encourage you to learn some basic words as the kids will absolutely love it. Flexibility and a positive attitude are essential, as you’ll be working in a dynamic environment where no two days are the same. You’ll need to show respect for the local culture and traditions and be open to adapting to the Moroccan way of life.
Are you ready to inspire children through sport and work in a diverse and energetic setting? Then you’re exactly the kind of volunteer we’re looking for!
Passion for Sport and Coaching
We’re after volunteers who are passionate about sport and helping kids grow their skills. Coaching experience is a bonus, but having the right attitude and enthusiasm is even more important.
Creativity and Initiative
This project gives you the freedom to introduce your own ideas for sports activities and games. We encourage you to get involved, share your input and use your creativity to make the program even more engaging.
Patience and Perseverance
Working with kids means being patient. Not every child learns at the same pace, and your calm, encouraging approach can make a big difference in their development.
Cultural Sensitivity
Morocco has a rich culture with its own traditions. Being respectful and open minded toward local customs is essential to having a positive and successful experience.
Flexibility and Adaptability
Life in Morocco can be quite different from what you’re used to. Being flexible and willing to adapt will help you contribute meaningfully and get the most from your time there.
Strong Communication Skills
Clear communication is important both with the kids and your local teammates. Being able to explain activities and provide support effectively is key.
Team Spirit
Collaboration with other volunteers and local coaches is essential to the success of this project. A positive team oriented attitude goes a long way.
At the Sports Education Project in Morocco, you can expect a unique and rewarding experience. You’ll help children build their sporting skills, confidence and sense of teamwork. You’ll work in a lively, energetic team where your ideas and creativity are encouraged and valued. Experiencing a new culture, making new friends and having a lasting impact on the lives of young people makes this opportunity truly unforgettable.
We completely understand that having your child volunteer overseas can feel like a big step. In fact, it’s often just as exciting for parents as it is for the young person themselves, and sometimes even a little more nerve-racking. That’s why we want to reassure you that your child is in good hands.
Since 2004, we’ve been supporting volunteers and have guided many young people through meaningful international experiences.
We take safety seriously. That begins with carefully selecting our partner organisations, volunteer projects, and host families. Every placement is thoroughly checked to make sure it meets our high standards for safety, support, and ethical practices.
Our experienced and caring local contacts are always there to support volunteers throughout their journey. From clear pre-departure preparation to personal assistance during the project, we’re available to help whenever needed.
We believe strongly in open communication. You're always welcome to contact us with any questions or concerns. We’re here not only for the volunteers, but for their families too.
You can feel confident knowing we are fully committed to creating a safe, supportive, and positive experience. Your child’s wellbeing, safety, and overall happiness are our top priorities.
If there's anything you’d like to ask or talk through, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We're here to support you every step of the way.
