This project, located in Iringa, Tanzania, is an essential institution focused on providing education and personal development for children with hearing impairments. Hearing issues are often not taken seriously, and there is limited access to specialist resources. As a result, many children in Tanzania struggle to find a school that offers the support they desperately need. This project is a beacon of hope, a place that provides opportunities for these children, aiming to empower them through tailored education and the development of essential life skills.
The mission is clear: to bridge the gap between the current challenges in learning, communication, and vocational skills, so these children can prepare for an independent and fulfilling life as valuable members of society.
The project provides an environment specifically designed to meet the needs of deaf and hard-of-hearing children. The teachers are trained in Tanzanian Sign Language (TSL) and use creative, visual, and kinesthetic learning methods. This project is not just about academics, but also about strengthening social skills, professional abilities, and emotional resilience. Students are given the tools they need to overcome obstacles and realise their dreams.
This approach ensures that the children not only gain knowledge but also develop confidence and learn to advocate for themselves. They are prepared for a future where they can thrive, not just survive.
Volunteers play a vital role in this project. They bring fresh insights, ideas, and practical skills, and the children feel recognised when special volunteers from overseas, such as from the Netherlands, come to support them. By joining this project, you'll have the chance to make a direct impact on the lives of these children while also growing through intercultural exchange and hands-on experiences. It’s a unique opportunity to learn about the challenges that deaf individuals in Tanzania face daily, and how you can make a difference in their lives.
While working with this group might initially seem challenging, volunteers repeatedly find it incredibly rewarding and enjoyable. They have a fantastic time, love interacting with the kids, and find it immensely valuable to contribute to their development. It’s an experience you won’t forget!

Each day will look a bit different, depending on what you're doing at the project. A typical day as a volunteer in this project is a perfect balance of education, social involvement, cultural exchange, and personal development. It’s a unique experience that not only enriches the lives of the students but also broadens your own horizons.
You generally work from Monday to Friday, from 9:00am to 3:00pm. This may vary slightly depending on which school you work at and whether you combine projects.
You work alongside teachers and other volunteers.
English is the main language used on the project. Since the people here are generally well educated, most speak reasonably good English.
Volunteers are welcome all year round. However, there is a long holiday in January when schools and this project are closed.
At the volunteer house, there is a kitchen where volunteers can prepare their own meals using food bought at the market. Our housekeeper can also cook meals for you. We have a fridge and plenty of kitchen utensils. Volunteers can also dine at one of the many nearby restaurants. For volunteers who prefer to stay with host families and cook together with them, this is possible. Usually, however, host families will cook for the volunteers.
Currently, there is no WiFi, but a SIM card can be bought for less than half a US dollar, and unlimited 4G internet can be added for less than 8 Australian dollars per week or about 30 Aussie dollars per month. There are separate bedrooms (dormitories) for male and female volunteers, and shared common areas and toilets (Western-style toilets).
Living conditions are basic, and power outages are common in Tanzania. Most rural village homes do not have running water, especially during dry periods. Bottled water is widely available for drinking. Laundry is done by volunteers by hand or can be done by the housekeeper for a small fee. Bedding (pillows and sheets) is provided, but volunteers are advised to bring their own towels and mosquito nets.
Volunteers walk from the volunteer house to the project or take a public bus (dala dala).
If you have some extra space in your bag and want to bring something for the project, they greatly appreciate it. Please check with us about useful and practical items to bring.
You will be picked up from the airport. You stay one night in Dar es Salaam. The next day, you will be taken to the bus station and travel by bus to Iringa with someone from the organisation. Then you go to the volunteer house where you can relax, unpack, and meet other volunteers. You will also get an introduction to the project.
We can organise your return trip as well. These costs are not included in the price. The arrival transfer is included. For the return trip with a hotel stay, the cost is $150
Check out the additional trips to see what you can do in your free time! We have some really great excursions for your downtime. And since you are in such a beautiful destination, it’s of course great to see more of the country!

For this project, we are looking for dedicated volunteers who have a passion for education and child development. We believe education is the key to a better future, and your contribution can make a huge impact on the lives of many children.
The projects in Tanzania are especially suited for volunteers aged between 17 and 29. For volunteers who are older, the project in Ilula is a better fit.
Affinity with Education and Child Development: We seek volunteers who are passionate about education and the well-being of children. Experience in teaching, pedagogy, or a related field is a plus, but enthusiasm and a genuine interest in helping children are essential.
Initiative and Proactivity: The ability to work independently and take initiative is crucial. In many cases, you will need to improvise and come up with creative solutions for unexpected challenges. A proactive attitude not only helps solve problems but also contributes to a dynamic and effective learning environment.
Patience: Patience is an indispensable quality when working with children. Every child learns at their own pace and in their own way. It is important to stay calm, even if progress seems slow. Your patience and perseverance can make a big difference in a child’s learning experience.
Cultural Sensitivity: Working in a different cultural context requires respect and understanding for local customs and traditions. Openness and willingness to learn from the culture you work in are essential for successful collaboration and a positive experience for both you and the community.
Flexibility and Adaptability: Conditions in Tanzania can be very different from what you are used to. Flexibility and the ability to adapt to new situations are therefore important. This applies both to physical living conditions and the work environment.
Communication Skills: Good communication skills are essential, both in contact with the children and with your colleagues and the local community. The ability to communicate clearly and respectfully contributes to a positive and productive working environment.
Team Spirit: The education project is a joint effort, and teamwork is key to success. A positive team spirit and willingness to collaborate with others, including local teachers and volunteers from diverse backgrounds, are important to achieve our goals.
As a volunteer in this project, you will be involved in various educational activities, including teaching lessons, supporting local teachers, organising extracurricular activities, and helping develop educational materials. You will play a valuable role in creating a stimulating and supportive learning environment for the children.
Your stay in Tanzania will not only give you the chance to make a difference in the lives of children but also to develop personally. You will discover new cultures, make friendships, and gain unforgettable experiences.
In short, if you have a passion for education and child development and are willing to commit to a challenging but rewarding environment, this education project in Tanzania is the perfect opportunity for you. Together, we can make a lasting impact on the future of these children.
We completely understand that having your child volunteer overseas can feel like a big step. In fact, it’s often just as exciting for parents as it is for the young person themselves, and sometimes even a little more nerve-racking. That’s why we want to reassure you that your child is in good hands.
Since 2004, we’ve been supporting volunteers and have guided many young people through meaningful international experiences.
We take safety seriously. That begins with carefully selecting our partner organisations, volunteer projects, and host families. Every placement is thoroughly checked to make sure it meets our high standards for safety, support, and ethical practices.
Our experienced and caring local contacts are always there to support volunteers throughout their journey. From clear pre-departure preparation to personal assistance during the project, we’re available to help whenever needed.
We believe strongly in open communication. You're always welcome to contact us with any questions or concerns. We’re here not only for the volunteers, but for their families too.
You can feel confident knowing we are fully committed to creating a safe, supportive, and positive experience. Your child’s wellbeing, safety, and overall happiness are our top priorities.
If there's anything you’d like to ask or talk through, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We're here to support you every step of the way.
