After the volunteer work, you'll cross over to the island of Bali, a popular destination among backpackers due to its numerous attractions, diverse culture, and beautiful beaches. Curious about the highlights of this trip and the itinerary? Read on!
Highlights of the Youth Trip Java & Bali:
We depart from Schiphol Airport towards our first destination: Java. After a long flight, we arrive in Yogyakarta, where we'll spend the first few days. We'll visit Borobudur, the largest Buddhist temple in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage site. A visit to this extraordinary temple is certainly worthwhile. Additionally, we'll take a city tour of Yogyakarta, exploring the city's landmarks, and embark on a jeep trip to Mount Merapi, which stands approximately 3,000 meters high and is the most active volcano in Indonesia.
Our journey continues by train eastward to Malang. In this city, we'll spend the next few days volunteering. Before we begin, we'll be welcomed with a welcome dinner and an introduction to what lies ahead. The volunteer work includes organising sports and games for a traditional community. We'll also collaborate with the foundation "Wees een Kind" to distribute meals to underprivileged individuals living along the railway tracks in Malang.
After several intensive days of volunteering, we bid farewell to the project. But don't worry: the journey continues. We travel towards Mount Bromo, an active volcano set in a unique landscape. The lava has destroyed everything around the crater, leaving behind a grey, moon-like terrain. We'll hike from Jemplang to Cemoro Lawang, where we'll stay overnight. Along the way, we'll pass the Jago Temple and the Pelangi Waterfall. The next morning, we rise early to hike to the Mt. Pananjakan viewpoint. Once at the top, we're treated to a stunning view of the Bromo volcano's surroundings. We'll have breakfast together and enjoy the sunrise. The hike promises to be a challenging but unforgettable experience.
It's time to leave Java behind and begin the second part of our journey: the beautiful Bali. This is one of Indonesia's most renowned islands, known for its stunning rice fields and beautiful beaches. We'll cross over to Bali by boat from Java and head to the fishing village of Permuteran. Here, we'll explore Bali's underwater world. Due to its beautiful coral reefs and diverse fish species, it's a popular spot for snorkelling. The following day, we'll proceed to Lovina to spot dolphins. Since the animals are mostly visible in the morning, we'll set out early by boat. The rest of the day is free to relax on the beach and recover from the intense days.
We continue our journey to Ubud, located in the heart of Bali and considered the cultural centre of the island. The area is predominantly green, with palm trees and rice fields. A popular attraction in Ubud is the Monkey Forest, home to over 250 curious monkeys who are eager to come close. It's the perfect place to observe monkeys in the wild. Additionally, we'll spend a day with a traditional rice farmer, learning about local life and their way of living and working. After lunch at the farmer's home, we'll take a walk through the rice fields and explore the rest of Ubud's surroundings.
The final stop of our journey through Indonesia is Kuta. This coastal town lies north of Bali and is the ideal place to relax on the beach and enjoy the sun. We'll conclude the trip with a farewell dinner, reflecting on a beautiful and special journey. Then, we'll prepare for the return trip and head back to the Netherlands, where we'll be welcomed by friends and family. The Youth Trip to Java & Bali is guaranteed to be an unforgettable adventure!
Please note: Due to the holiday season, the Christmas trip to Java & Bali is two days shorter than the summer trip. During the Christmas trip, the activities in Yogyakarta and Permuteran are omitted. In Lovina, there is still the opportunity to snorkel after dolphin spotting.
During the Youth Trip to Java & Bali, you'll participate in various projects in Malang, a city located south of Java. You'll engage in volunteer work within a traditional community, organising sports and games for local children. Additionally, you'll assist in a daycare centre for underprivileged families. Parents work during the day to earn a living, while the children stay at the daycare to avoid exposure to risks such as abuse and crime. Furthermore, Vrijwillig Wereldwijd collaborates with the foundation "Wees een Kind." With this foundation, you'll help distribute meals to underprivileged individuals living along the railway tracks in Malang, who have little prospect of a better future.
