Are you interested in medicine but don’t have the relevant qualifications? You can join the Medical Project, where you’ll have the opportunity to shadow medical professionals in a hospital. This provides a unique chance to observe surgeries, gain insight into traditional medical treatments, learn about the behaviour of psychiatric patients, and explore various treatments, among other experiences. You’ll have the chance to visit different hospitals and can even combine several hospitals to gain insight into various aspects of medicine.
Volunteers are welcomed to the Pre-Medical Observation Program in Sri Lanka. The main goal of the program is to provide observation opportunities in a private hospital for non-medical volunteers. Upon registration, the hospital will assign a mentor who will guide you throughout your experience.
Since its establishment, the hospital has built a reputation for world-class general surgical care. It is a surgical hospital, so interns have the opportunity to observe surgeries and other surgical procedures.
The hospital’s surgical services include:
This is an observation program. You can choose which department(s) you would like to observe.
As a volunteer, you’ll be placed in a leading private hospital and will observe under the guidance of doctors and nursing staff. Generally, you’ll work Monday to Friday from around 9:00am to 5:00pm.
In general, the hours are Monday to Friday from around 9:00am to 5:00pm. The schedule can be adjusted by the hospital, so this will be discussed with you during your initial meeting at the hospital.
Since you’ll be placed at a busy teaching hospital, there will always be enough staff around including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and more. There may also be other volunteers present on the project.
Most of the staff speak good English, especially at the hospital in Colombo.
This project runs all year round. You will not work on weekends.
You’ll stay in a volunteer house. In Colombo, you may share a room with up to 3 or 4 other participants of the same gender. There are Western style toilets, free WiFi, and you’ll receive three meals per day. Laundry facilities are also available. If you want to use the washing machine, a small fee may be charged. Please check in about this.
In Colombo, you’ll be picked up each day by a regular tuk tuk driver. It’s a great way to get around in Sri Lanka.
If you’ve got a bit of extra space in your luggage and would like to bring something for the project, it would be greatly appreciated. Please check with us first about what useful and practical items to bring.
Harsha will pick you up from the airport.
Check out our extra trips to see all the things you can do in your spare time! We have some truly amazing excursions for your free days. And since you’re already in such a beautiful destination, it’s the perfect opportunity to explore more of the country.
In Sri Lanka, your contact person is Harsha. He speaks excellent English and is the coordinator for the volunteer projects. You can ask him anything about your trip to Sri Lanka, and he’ll always be available to support you on the ground. Harsha is a fantastic contact person. This is a photo of Harsha with his son and wife.

We completely understand that having your child volunteer overseas can feel like a big step. In fact, it’s often just as exciting for parents as it is for the young person themselves, and sometimes even a little more nerve-racking. That’s why we want to reassure you that your child is in good hands.
Since 2004, we’ve been supporting volunteers and have guided many young people through meaningful international experiences.
We take safety seriously. That begins with carefully selecting our partner organisations, volunteer projects, and host families. Every placement is thoroughly checked to make sure it meets our high standards for safety, support, and ethical practices.
Our experienced and caring local contacts are always there to support volunteers throughout their journey. From clear pre-departure preparation to personal assistance during the project, we’re available to help whenever needed.
We believe strongly in open communication. You're always welcome to contact us with any questions or concerns. We’re here not only for the volunteers, but for their families too.
You can feel confident knowing we are fully committed to creating a safe, supportive, and positive experience. Your child’s wellbeing, safety, and overall happiness are our top priorities.
If there's anything you’d like to ask or talk through, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We're here to support you every step of the way.
