Escape to the serene beauty of Ruma Village, nestled in the heart of the majestic Dhaulagiri region in Nepal. Surrounded by towering mountains, with breathtaking views of the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna peaks, volunteering in this charming village offers a unique and unforgettable experience. Ruma, home to just 1,000 friendly residents, is a hidden gem.
The volunteer project can take place at the medical post, which opened in 2024, if you are a doctor, nurse, physiotherapist, or have another medical background. Alternatively, you can work at the government school as a teacher or childcare assistant. Either way, you'll be warmly welcomed and enjoy the wonderful hospitality.
You'll stay at David’s Homestay, just a 5 minute walk from the medical post and 10 minutes from the government school. The homestay is run by a friendly family with two children and accommodates up to 6 guests. The family provides delicious homemade meals made with fresh vegetables from their own farm. Enjoy the genuine hospitality of the Roka family, who are eager to share their culture and traditions with you. In your free time, you can explore the area, go on a beautiful trek in the mountains, participate in fun activities with the family and local children, or simply relax and enjoy the stunning views.
You wake up around 7:30 AM and take in the magical view before enjoying a delicious breakfast. At 10:00 AM, the school day begins with a morning routine, followed by lessons. You have a break from 1:35 PM to 2:20 PM. You can choose to have lunch at the homestay or grab something at the school canteen. Afterward, lessons continue until 4:00 PM. You can relax at the homestay, read a good book, or have fun with the children and their friends. Around 7:00 PM, you inform the host that you're ready for dinner.
At the medical post, you're also expected to be there from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with a break in between. You'll work in a team with a doctor and five nurses. Medical treatments are usually walk-in, as residents of Ruma and the surrounding villages come by without an appointment. You won’t know in advance whether it will be a busy day or not, so no two workdays are the same. On set dates, health programs such as vaccination campaigns are organised.
Recently, the first plastic cleanup day was held, which was a huge success. It has increased awareness and a sense of responsibility for better environmental practices and waste management. Important figures in the village are willing to establish a waste management system in the region. If you are passionate about this subject and have good ideas for improvements, feel free to bring them along!
